PRODUCTION: Life in Squares in Postproduction

By Iulia Blaga

BUCHAREST: The Bucharest-based young Serbian director Ivana Mladenovic is in the final stages of post-production (sound and colour correction) with an 84 minute documentary investigating the life of four 19 years old boys after their release from penitentiary.

Life in Squares/Lumea în pătrăţele was written by Ivana Mladenovic and Bianca Oana, and shot by Luchian Ciobanu and Claudiu Ciprian Popa. It is produced by Daniel Mitulescu and Strada Film (www.stradafilm.ro). Bianca Oana is the executive producer. The budget is 150,000 euro.

The project received a production grant of 53,900 euro (228,000 RON) from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) in 2009, and was the first documentary selected in Sarajevo CineLink - Work In Progress.

The shooting started in 2008 concurrent with acting workshops for youth prisoners conducted by the director Florin Şerban for his film If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle/Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier (also produced by Strada Film and awarded at the Berlinale 2010). Shooting wraped in April 2010. Ana Ilieşiu is the editor.

The date of the premiere has yet to be determined, but will likely be influenced by festival scheduling.
