The 13th edition of When East Meets West came to an end after three intense full days of pitching sessions, works in progress, labs, talks, meetings and hugs. During the closing award ceremony, the WEMW Co-Production Forum Jury consisting of Darya Bassel (Moon Man), Pierre Dallois (Ciclic Centre-Val de Loire), Gordan Matic (Film Center Serbia) and Elma Tataragic (Sarajevo IFF) announced the three top winners of this year.

LOS ANGELES: Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO has been nominated in the International Feature Film Category at the 95th Academy Awards. Four Czech professionals were nominated for the German/US/UK coproduction All Quiet on the Western Front.

BUCHAREST: The independent comedy-drama Taxi Drivers / Taximetriștri by Bogdan Theodor Olteanu debuted as second at the domestic weekly box office, after Avatar: The Way of Water. This is the first domestic film to be released by Forum Film Romania, which is also distributing James Cameron’s film.

VALLETTA: The film industry injected 85 m EUR in the Maltese economy in 2022, the largest amount in the last 10 years.

PRAGUE: The romantic comedy Spring in Prague, directed by Lester Dimaranan and starring Czech-Macedonian actress Sara Sandeva and Filipino actor Paolo Gumabao, will start shooting in the Czech capital on 7 February 2023.

TALLINN: The Estonian/French/Icelandic coproduction Smoke Sauna Sisterhood has been acquired by Autlook Filmsales. The first long documentary by Anna Hints is having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival running 19 – 29 January 2023.

PRAGUE: Avatar: The Way of Water has reached 1 m admissions in the Czech Republic in only one month, the fastest of any film in the 30-year history of the country.

BUCHAREST: The long documentary Between Revolutions / Între revoluții by the Romanian director Vlad Petri has been acquired by CAT&Docs ahead if its world premiere in Berlinale Forum 2023. The film is a coproduction between Romania and Croatia.

VALLETTA: The third season of Amazon Freevee’s series Alex Rider is currently shooting in Malta and the UK. The new season is based on Anthony Horowitz’s novel Scorpia.

TRIESTE: Eight titles are running in the Feature Film Competition at the 34th edition of the Trieste Film Festival, running 21 – 28 January 2023.
