SOFIA: The Bulgarian National Film Center allotted 1,856,000 EUR / 3,630,000 BGN in its second session at the end of November 2017. Nine projects, including three feature films with higher budgets, one feature film with a lower budget, one debut feature and three short films, received production funding. The development of four feature films was also supported.
SOFIA: Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers adopted a draft of an amended Film Industry Act, which must align film industry to the latest European Union rules.
SOFIA: Victor Bojinov’s debut feature, the historical drama Heights, based on Milen Ruskov’s eponymous epic bestseller, opened in first place at the domestic box office with nearly 30,000 admissions on 65 screens.
SOFIA: Actress/producer Jana Karaivanova has been appointed as executive director of the Bulgarian National Film Centre on 27 October 2017. She took the post after an election call including three other candidates.
VARNA: Ilian Djevelekov’s sophomore feature Omnipresent won the Golden Rose Award of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival (30 September - 7 October 2017).
VARNA: Stephan Komandarev’s low budget film Directions (aka Compatibility) will screen in the main competition of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival (30 September - 7 October 2017). The world premiere of the Bulgarian/German/Macedonian coproduction took place on 19 May 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film screened in the Un Certain Regard programme.
VARNA: Rouzie Hassanova’s first feature and low budget film Radiogram screens in the main competition of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival, which wraps on 7 October 2017. The film is a coproduction between Bulgaria, Poland and Turkey.
VARNA: Stanislav Todorov – Rogi’s first feature film Bubblegum will screen in the main competition of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival currently running through 7 October 2017. It is one of the successful films made since the Bulgarian National Film Center introduced its low-budget format in 2014.
VARNA: Konstantin Bojanov’s first English-language film Light Thereafter (aka I Want to be Like You) screens in the main competition of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival (30 September - 7 October 2017). The film is a coproduction between Bulgaria, Belgium and the UK.
VARNA: Katerina Goranova’s and Asen Blatechky’s first feature film Broken Road screens in the main competition of the 35th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival, which runs through 7 October 2017. International star Michael Madsen, American vocalist and guitarist Sully Erna and talented Bulgarian racing driver Pavel Lefterov have parts in the film.
