PLZEN: The Way Out, which marked Petr Václav’s return to directing after an absence of 13 years, took the main award at the 28th Finale Plzen Film Festival which wrapped on 2 May 2015. The film also won seven awards at the Czech Lions in late February, including the prize for best film.

For the second year, Slovak films were also in the competition for the main award, the Golden Kingfisher. Two Slovak productions garnered Golden Kingfishers: Miro Remo’s Comeback won the best documentary prize, and public broadcaster Slovak TV won with its series Secret Lives.

The Czech/German coproduction Schmitke, which won the best pitching award at Plzen two years ago when the producing/directing team were just completing their film school studies, won the student jury award for best feature film.

Plzen is celebrating its status as a European Culture Capital in 2015 and the festival marked that with a series of films about Plzen as well as by highlighting the long and notable tradition of Czech animation.
