PRAGUE: President Blanik by Marek Najbrt, a satirical film based on a popular Czech sitcom, which opened in first place on 1 February 2018, held on to the second spot on the Czech box office in week two, leading a list of four films in the top ten.

The 85-minute film, distributed by Falcon and directed by Marek Najbrt, was produced by Negativ and coproduced by Czech TV and Seznam. It’s 1 February 2018 premiere followed on the heels of the Presidential election and the film neatly captures many of the leading Czech politicians – some unwittingly, such as President Milos Zeman – on screen.

Filip Renc’s comedy Desperate Women Doing Desperate Things / Zoufalé zeny delají zoufalé veci, which opened in the number one spot in mid-January, was in the seventh place in its fourth week in release, with 153,000 admissions and 22 M CZK, with expectations to earn a respectable 1 M EUR by the end of its fifth week in release. The film was produced by Mojo Film and distributed by Bioscop/AQS.

The box office numbers for Czech domestic films 2018 are modest compared with the strongest years. Newly released data for 2017 shows that Czech films have around 20% of the market, compared with high-water years that hovered around the 30% mark.
