BERLIN: Two Lithuanian documentaries will open the curtain to the unknown daily life of Belarus at this year’s European Film Market.

Lina Luzyte, the director of a documentary Igrushki, explores the life of one small town in the country that Western journalists hardly ever get into, while Robert Denis and Mark Byrne dive into the murky waters of the dodgy politics of this Lithuanian neighbour. Their film Пoд колпаком – Under the Hood is a co-production of Lithuanian and Irish filmmakers.

“Lithuanian directors bravely observe and judge the environment, they are not afraid to provoke, do not shun from the controversial topics or those topics that are sometimes considered a taboo. All seven Lithuanian films presented in Berlin’s film market are unique and distinctive“, says Rolandas Kvietkauskas, the Head of the Lithuanian Film Centre.

Apart from two documentaries about life in Belarus, Lithuanian line-up at Berlinale EFM 2013 includes two other documentaries and three feature films. Documentary director Giedre Beinoriute will participate in EFM for the second year in a row. In her new film Conversations on Serious Topics she interviews children and teenagers who have an honest answer to every single question about the world around them – sometimes melancholic, sometimes comic or dramatic. The debut documentary Father (dir. Marat Sargsyan) tells the story of one of the most famous criminals of the Soviet Union who became a father for the 11th time at the age of 71.

A sci-fi drama Vanishing Waves (dir. Kristina Buozyte) tells a story of a futuristic scientific experiment, in which main character Lukas explores the mind of comatose woman. The movie won the Jury Special Mention at the 47th Karlovy Vary Film festival, became the best European sci-fi film at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in Spain, was successfully travelling around other film festivals across the world and just had a national premier.

Maris Martinsons will present his provoking Christmas Eve drama Christmas. Uncensored. The film was already screened in Baltic Event market and had a warm welcome in cinemas across Lithuania.

Young filmmaker Romas Zabarauskas, who had his previous short film presented in Berlinale Panorama in 2011, is coming back to Berlin with his début feature film We Will Riot. The film tells a story of a black DJ Luke who unexpectedly finds out about a secret his wealthy parents had been keeping away from him – his grandmother is from Lithuania.

Lithuania will also have a national stand that will present the latest films from the country, possible shooting locations and serve as a venue for meetings of the industry‘s professionals. Formal and informal events will take place at the stand.
