Łukasz Palkowski’s Gods Opens at Number One at Polish Box Office

    WARSAW: Polish films took possession of the top three slots at the local box office with the latest in a string of local hits, Gods directed by Łukasz Palkowski topping the Polish box office on its opening weekend. Gods scored over 210,000 and pushed Jan Komasa's Warsaw 44 into the number two slot. With Patryk Vega’s Służby Specjalne in the number three slot Polish films overwhelmingly dominated the local box office.

    The biopic drama Gods about a famous Polish heart surgeon Zbigniew Religa opened in Polish cinemas on 10 October 2014 distributed by Next Film. During its first weekend the film had 216,478 admissions noting a stronger opening weekend than Jan Komasa's Warsaw 44, the current Polish box office number one title with over 1.5 mln admissions. Gods has gathered over 265,000 admissions so far, including pre-premiere screenings.

    The film was produced by Piotr Woźniak-Starak and Krzysztof Rak of Watchout Productions in coproduction with Agora, Born To Film Productions, Digital 35, Fundacja Sztuki Filmowej Ingenium and Orangeand supported by the Polish Film Institute. The film was awarded Best Picture at the 39. Gdynia Film Festival and collected awards for Best Leading Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Art Direction.

    "I wanted to make a film that would be reminiscent in style of American productions, make it universal and understandable for audiences all around the world. I am hopeful that my film will travel." director Łuaksz Palkowski told FNE. The film's distribution abroad has not been confirmed yet.

    Warsaw 44 was produced by Akson Studio  and Patryk Vega’s Służby Specjalne was produced by Ent One in Poland.
