GDYNIA: Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s second feature film Fugue will compete in the main competition of the 43rd Gdynia Film Festival, running from 17 to 22 September 2018. The film has been sold in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, China, Denmark, Canada among others.

Fugue is a psychological drama following a woman who lost her memory, and it was inspired by real events. The main character is played by Gabriela Muskała, who also penned the script.

The film is a Polish/Czech/Swedish coproduction produced by MD4, Axman Production and Common Ground Pictures in coproduction with Odra-Film, the Mazovia Warsaw Film Fund, Magic Lab and Film i Väst. It was supported by the Polish Film Institute and the Czech Film Center..

"I didn’t want to just make a plain psychological drama, so for a while I was wondering how to tell this story in a way that would allow the audience to really come close to Alicja’s experience — how to find the balance between the reality and fiction. I knew that I needed to make a film that would utilise many genres to create a rich tale about not just this amnesia, but also about fear, depression and rebirth", Agnieszka Smoczyńska told FNE.

The film premiered in Cannes' Semaine de la Critique and was showcased in the Another View section of the Karlovy Vary IFF. It will open in Polish cinemas on 7 December 2018 distributed by Kino Świat and in the Czech Republic on 6 December distributed by A Company
