All That I Love chosen as Polish Oscar candidate

By

The Polish Oscar Committee has chosen All That I Love as the Polish Oscar nomination candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film.

All That I Love, directed by Jacek Borcuch, is a coming of age story sset in Poland in the ‘80s. Four small town teenagers decide to form a punk rock band and play at the local festival. Their transition from boys to men takes place during the political turmoil and the rise of the Solidarity movement. The emergence of censorship and repression forces the boys to face the ruthless reality of the communist regime.

Jacek Borcuch, a veteran Polish filmmaker, is author of several Polish television productions and features. All That I Love is the first Polish picture presenting the events of the ‘80s from the perspective of the younger generation.

The Oscar Committee, headed by Polish director Agnieszka Holland, includes Polish film professionals working in the country and abroad including Allan Starski, Borys Lankosz, Jan A. P Kaczmarek, Agata Dominik, Dariusz Jabłoński, Waldemar Kalinowski, Bartek Konopka, Andrzej Jakimowski and Michał Chaciński. "We found All That I Love to be the most well-rounded out of all the considered mores," the Committee stated.

"It is full of warmth and energy, as well as an interesting attempt to face our complicated recent past, which is already very hard to translate on to the screen. The film had a positive audience reception; it was also presented in USA, where it was very well received. This guarantees that even if a Polish film will not be nominated for an Oscar it will generate interest as well as sympathy and will proudly represent our Cinema."

The film's producer is Polish company Prasa i Film in co-operation with Telewizja Polska (www.tvp.pl) and Canal+ (www.canalplus.pl) with financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl). Pre-production started in April 2008 with shooting the following September and February in Hel and Gdynia, according to Magda Sapirowska of Prasa i Film. The budget is 3.5 million PLN (€855,600) with 1 million PLN provided by the Polish Film Institute.

All That I Love won several local and international awards including best script at the EFF in Brussels this year (www.fffb.be), FIPRESCI and CICAE Awards at the Festroia International Film Festival (www.festroia.pt), the Hollywood Eagle Award at the Polish Film Festival in Los Angeles (www.polishfilmla.org) and best scene design at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia 2009 (www.pl.fpff.pl).
