PRODUCTION: The Bear in postproduction

By Iulia Blaga

The Bear, the second film from Dan Chişu (Websitestory, www.websitestory.ro), has completed shooting and is now in post-production.

The Bear is a bittersweet comedy involving a bear from the Bucharest State Circus, his human collegues and a German hunter against the backdrop of Romania of 1990, when the financial issues were just one side of the story.

The Bear/Ursul is produced by Tudor Giurgiu and Libra Film (www.librafilm.net). It received a €268,824 grant from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro ) in 2008 and is part of the €136,200 MEDIA (http://ec.europa.eu ) slate development funding for five films produced by Libra Film. The budget is €550,000. The script written by Dan Chişu received the Best Pitch Award at Connecting Cottbus.

The shooting started in August 3, 2009, and lasted for 24 days, taking place around Bucharest and in Moldavia. The cast includes Mihai Constantin, Magda Catone, Claudiu Bleonţ, Şerban Pavlu, Gabriel Spahiu and Andreea Grămoşteanu. The DOP is Vivi Drăgan Vasile (Moromeţii, Occident). The composer Goran Bregovic is confirmed for the soundtrack.

The editing was completed at Chainsaw Europe Studio (www.chainsaweurope.com ) in Bucharest, and the visual effects were done at DSG Visual Effects and Animation (www.dsg.ro ), also in Bucharest. The film is now in the final sound mixing stage at Creative Sound (www.creative-sound.fr ), Paris. The local premiere is planned for March 2011, Giurgiu told FNE.
