Production: Excursionist filming in Lithuania

By Aukse Kancereviciute

Director Audrius Juzėnas is shooting the Lithuanian feature film The Excursionist (Ekskursantė) through May 23 in Vilnius.

The Excursionist is produced by Lithuanian production company CineMark with lead producer Algis Semeškevičius and executive producer Lineta Mišeikytė.

The film is based on the true story of an 11-year-old girl from the Baltics, who escaped a Trans-Siberian train transporting prisoners to the Gulag in the 1950's. Her 6,000 kilometer journey home was highlighted by adventure and danger.

"This film is dedicated to the 60's generation, marked by loss and pain, to the witnesses of ruthless history and to those who prevented the destructive evil seed of injustice, hate and vengeance from sprouting," Juzėnas said of his film.

Russian star Sergei Garmash, who appeared in Andrej Wajda's Oscar-nominated 2007 film Katyn 2007, is cast in the film, along with Raisa Rezanova, Ksenija Ropoport, Igor Savockin, Nelė Savičenko, Darius Meškauskas, and 11 year-old Anastasija Marcenkaitė in the lead.

The Excursionist is sponsored by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture (www.lrkm.lt ), Forum Cinemas (www.forumcinemas.lt), Lithuanian National TV (www.lrt.lt), Lithuanian Railways and private sponsors.

The film is budgeted at about €1 million.

Post-production will be completed by the end of the year 2009. The premiere is set for 2010.
