Svetlana Khodchenkova, Konstantin Khabensky and Denis Shvedov play the leading roles. Svetlana Khodchenkova has just finished a starring role as The Viper in James Mangold’s The Wolverine. She was also one of the stars of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy where Khabensky also appeared. In The Divers she plays a woman who has to choose between two men. International audiences will also remember Khabensky from Timur Bekmambetov’s Night Watch. The cast also includes Maltese actors Jimi Busuttill, David Rizzo, Clint Grech and John Suda.
Russian scriptwriter Denis Rodimin, known for scripting a string of hits including the cult film Boomer, wrote the script for The Divers. The story is a treasure hunt combined with intriguing relationships between the main characters – two men and one beautiful woman. The story also has elements of Maltese history.
Sergey Melkumov, Alexander Rodnyansky and Natalia Gorina are producing through Non-Stop Production and Twin Media. The Director of Photography was Sergey Machilsky one of Russia’s top DoPs with Svoi and hit TV mini-series The White Guard among his many credits.
Buslov also took his crew and actors underwater to heighten the tension of the adventure. The Russian helmer is making the best use of Malta’s clean sea water which offers perfect lighting conditions up to several metres beneath the surface.
Underwater Director of Photography Evgeny Tomashov was responsible for capturing the beauty of the Maltese seascape, as Film Corporation Ltd specialises in underwater filming. The Maltese team of professionals includes Art Director Charlo Dalli, Casting Director Mavis Formosa and location manager Annamaria Grima.
Shooting took place in more than 20 different locations throughout Malta, including scenic views of the capital city of Valletta (at the National Library and Grandmaster’s Palace), St. Thomas Bay, Marsaxlokk and Birgu. The premiere is set for mid-2014.
