Holland heads Polish Film Academy

    Renowned director Agnieszka Holland has been named the new president of the Polish Film Academy. The members of the Academy nominate and vote for the winners of the Eagle Awards for the best Polish films of the preceding year.

    Among Holland's best-known films are Europa, Europa, which captured an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1991. Others include Total Eclipse, To Kill a Priest about the murder of pro-Solidarity priest Father Jerzy Popieluszko, Washington Square, The Secret Garden and Copying Beethoven.

    Founded in 2003, the Academy has more than 500 members.
