PRODUCTION: Closed Alliance in Preproduction

By Katarzyna Grynienko

WARSAW: Ryszard Bugajski will direct Closed Alliance (Układ zamknięty) a drama about a government conspiracy with a script from Mirosław Pepka and Michał Pruski, writers of Black Thursday.

Closed Alliance is based on the true story of three Polish businessmen unfairly accused and incarcerated for fraud as a result of a conspiracy against them by high profile government officials. They were jailed for seven years, during which time the people responsible took over their prosperous factory.

Pepka and Pruski had major success with their last fact-based script, Black Thursday exploring the dramatic events of a workers riot in December 1970 in Gdyni . They found the topic for Closed Alliance in an old news clipping and became fascinated with the obvious mistreatment of the three men. The proposed the story to directors Xawery Żuławski and Ryszard Bugajski, with the latter taking on the project. "We need to make a film about this," Bugajski said.

The film is produced by Filmicon Dom Filmowy (www.filmicon.pl), a company founded by Pepka and Olga Bieniek. Filming begins 27 April 2011 in the Pomeranian region, where the real case took place, and a prison in Malbork. The cast includes highly praised Polish actors Janusz Gajos, Kazimierz Kaczor and Katarzyna Figura. The production is planned to wrap in fall 2011.
