Production: Flying Lessons in development

By Iulia Blaga

Moldavian filmmaker Igor Cobileanski is in early development with his first feature based on a script written by Corneliu Porumboiu (Police, Adjective) and himself.

Flying Lessons aka Broken Rib (working title), which Porumboiu began at the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence, is a bittersweet drama about a 25-year-old small-time drug dealer from a forgotten little town in the contemporary Republic of Moldavia, who tries to cope with his father's suicide, his sad lovestory and the desire to fly a glider.

"The subject of the film is suitable for the international market because the story is universal -- the struggle of a young man to survive in the middle of destructive relationship -- yet it has local favor," said Alex Teodorescu, the producer of the film.

The project is produced by Saga Film (www.sagafilm.ro) and received €300,000 from the Romanian National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) this year. The film has not yet signed on co-producers or a sales agent. The shooting is planned to start in autumn 2010. The estimated budget is €1,200,000.

The casting and the DOP are still to be set. The project will participate in the June 20-22 co-production forum at Moscow IFF. Alex Teodorescu is participating with Flying Lessons at the EAVE Workshop in Milan June 7-15.
