Two new Romanian feature-length documentaries exploring the country's traditional past are attracting international co-production partners.
Close to the Heavens, a debut from Titus Faschina, is a Romanian-German co-production focusing on a family of herders whose old habits are challenged by the EU regulations.
The 90 minute black and white documentary is produced by Thomas Ciulei and Europolis Film (website under construction) together with Heino Deckert and ma.ja.de (www.majade.de), with the support of ARTE (www.arte.tv), Romanian National Television (www.tvr.ro) Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (www.mdm-online.de), CNC România (www.cncinema.abt.ro), Der Deutsche Filmförderfonds (www.ffa.de) and Eurimages (www.coe.int).
The budget is €350.000, Ciulei told FNE.
Shooting started August 30 and will wrap in March 2010. The theatrical release is set for early 2011.
Birds Way, the debut of Hungarian Klára Trencsény, follows the daily routine of a Russian Lipovan community (from the Danube Delta) struggling to survive and maintain its traditions.
The film is a production of Libra Film Productions (www.librafilm.net) together with Hai-Hui Entertainment, MEDIA Programme (ec.europa.eu) and the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro). Tudor Giurgiu is producing.
The film was shot between September 2008 and January 2009, with a budget of €118,000. Its world premiere is at the ASTRA Film Fest, Sibiu.
