CANNES: One of the most highly anticipated films at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival was Fjord, the latest work from acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. The film premiered in the Official Competition.  Mungiu was awarded the Palme d’Or, in 2007 for his celebrated 2007 film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days making him a front runner for the award this year.

Fjord is Mungiu’s first English-language feature and his first film set primarily outside Romania. The story follows the Gheorghiu family, a deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian couple who move with their children to a remote village on a Norwegian fjord. They become friendly with a neighbouring family, but tensions emerge when one of their daughters arrives at school with bruises. As local authorities and residents begin to investigate, questions arise about parenting, cultural differences, religious beliefs and the limits of state intervention. Rather than presenting easy answers, the film explores how communities respond when personal convictions collide with social norms.

The film stars Sebastian Stan as Mihai Gheorghiu and Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve as his wife Lisbet. Supporting roles are played by Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen and Lisa Loven Kongsli. Shot in Norway, the production was a major international co-production involving Romania, Norway, France, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Cinematography was handled by Tudor Vladimir Panduru, a longtime collaborator of Mungiu.

During the Cannes press conference, Mungiu discussed the origins of the project and the themes that interested him. He explained that the story grew from his fascination with how different societies define acceptable behaviour and how quickly people can judge one another when cultural values clash. He noted that the film was not intended to offer simple conclusions but to encourage audiences to confront difficult moral questions.

The cast also spoke about the complexity of the characters. Sebastian Stan described the film as an examination of “people trying to do what they believe is right,” while acknowledging that those beliefs can lead to conflict and misunderstanding. Renate Reinsve emphasized the film’s interest in empathy, observing that many of the characters struggle to understand perspectives different from their own.

Cristian Mungiu has long been one of the leading figures of the Romanian New Wave. Born in Iași, Romania, he first gained international attention with Occident (2002). His breakthrough came with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the Palme d’Or and became one of the defining European films of the 21st century. He later directed Beyond the Hills (2012), which won awards for screenplay and acting at Cannes, Graduation (2016), which earned him the Best Director prize, and R.M.N. (2022), another Cannes Competition selection. Throughout his career, Mungiu has explored themes of morality, faith, authority and social pressure.

At Cannes 2026, Fjord received an enthusiastic reception, including a lengthy standing ovation following its premiere demonstrating Mungiu’s status as one of contemporary cinema’s most significant auteurs.
