TBILISI: Georgian writer/director Ana Urushadze is currently in postproduction with her second feature film Supporting Role, which is a Georgian/Estonian/Turkish/Swiss/American coproduction.

After a 15-year hiatus, a star of Georgian cinema attends the casting call of a young female director, where for the first time in his life he is asked to play the supporting role of a bizarre and unsympathetic elderly character. He leaves the casting unconvinced, bordering on insulted, but he will gradually succumb to the part and will become enchanted by the unknown. An irreversible process of self-transformation will unfold.

The film stars Dato Bakhtadze, Nata Murvanidze, Lasha Mebuke, Nino Kasradze and Eka Demetradze.

Supporting Role is produced by Davit Tsintsadze through Zazafilms (Georgia), Ivo Felt through Allfilm (Estonia), Sophio Bendiashvili and Bacho Meburishvili through Enkeny Films (Georgia),  Zeynep Atakan through Zeyno Film (Turkey), Dato Bakhtadze and Andrey Epifanov through Cinetrain (Switzerland) and Eleonora Granata through Melograno Films (USA).

"Having the privilege of working with Ana Urushadze makes me genuinely happy. The current film is something totally original and brave, and we see it as a festival pleaser with nice potential to reach a wide audience. With the most beautiful cast, a great cinematographer and a bunch of experienced producers, we should have a chance to achieve a little bit of success", Estonian producer Ivo Felt told FNE.

The project was financed by the Georgian National Film Center (2022), the Estonian Film Institute (2023), the Estonian Cultural Endowment (2023), the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe (2022), Eurimages (2024) and the Georgian Film Enterprise cash rebate programme.

The project also received a cash reward at the CineLink Co-production Market in 2020.

The principal photography took place in Tbilisi and Rustavi (Georgia) from 15 March till 29 April 2024.

The date and place of the premiere are still to be announced.

Ana Urushadze’s debut feature Scary Mother (2017) won several international awards and was Georgia’s candidate for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award in the Best International Feature Film category. The film was a Georgian/Estonian coproduction between Studio Artizm and Allfilm.
